Waste management agency Pikitup has added 41 new caged trucks to its fleet to enhance the collection of recyclable waste in the areas where its separation at source (SAS) programme is in effect across the City of Johannesburg.

The expanded fleet reduces the volume of waste sent to landfill sites and supports efforts to preserve limited airspace at the city’s four remaining landfill sites, the company says.

The SAS programme was introduced in 2018 and initially targeted select, high-income areas with the aim of diverting recyclable waste from landfills.

The initiative supports long-term national targets that require municipalities to recycle 97% of waste and landfill only 3% by 2050, the company adds.

Further, the new fleet also complements other initiatives, such as converting garden sites into integrated waste management facilities that accept multiple waste streams.

Pikitup currently operates 41 such facilities across all seven regions of the city.

Meanwhile, Pikitup has also secured six new compactor trucks and bought a further 12, thereby supplementing the six acquired in the prior financial year.

These vehicles are expected to significantly improve operational efficiencies and reduce breakdowns to ensure that weekly waste collection services run on schedule, it says.
